INTRODUCTION

Syro Malabar Mission (SyMM) is an initiative of the Syro Malabar Synod towards awakening missionary awareness in the Mother Church and thus supports the missionary activities in its mission territories.  The XIX Synod, while planning for the celebration of the Syro-Malabar Mission Year (2011-2012), decided to: “Start an organization (Funding Agency) to help the needs of the Mission (E.16)”. As per that Synodal decision, an “ASSOCIATION OF SUPPORTERS OF THE SYRO-MALABAR MISSION (ASSM)” was formed on 01st October 2011. His Beatitude Mar George Card. Alencherry appointed Mar Gregory Karotemprel, Bishop Emeritus of Rajkot Eparchy, as the first director of this Association.He did an outstanding pioneering work and was relived in the month of August 2014, after three years of excellent service. His Excellency Bp Mar Raphael Thattil took charge as the new director of ASSM on 22nd August 2014.The Synod of Bishops of August 2016 renamed the association as SYRO- MALABAR MISSION (SyMM).

 The Motto of SyMM is "Know the Mission and Be a Missionary”.

PURPOSE OF SyMM

The purpose of SyMM is to form missionary awareness in the hearts of the Syro-Malabar Faithful and facilitate to reach their supports to the missionary activities in the mission territories outside Kerala.All Christians are missionaries and thus all the 9,00,000 families of the Syro Malabar Church are the associates of this Office.

GENERAL CONTRIBUTIONS

1.

Dioceses/Parishes:

All parishes of the Syro Malabar Dioceses collect a yearly contribution of Rs. 200/- from each family and send it to the SyMM office.

2.

Religious Congregations:

All Religious houses and the houses of the Consecrated life of the Apostolic Life are requested to contribute a minimum of Rs. 500/- annually.

3.

Individuals:

Some well wisher individuals donate to the Mission work of the Syro Malabar Church.

4.

Institutions:

All the institutions of the Syro Malabar Church are requested to contribute a minimum of Rs 1000/- annually.

ACTIVITIES

  1. "SPONSOR A SEMINARIAN”

This programme of SyMM assists a well-wisher/family/association to support the missionary formation of a Seminarian who has joined a Mission Eparchy or Congregation to become a missionary priest. The Sponsorship amount is Rs.1,00,000/- (One Lakh only) which can be paid in different instalments. The sponsor and seminarian are introduced each other and remembered each other in the daily prayers. The Seminarian can be either from Philosophy or Theology.

2. “SPONSOR A SISTER”    This programme of SyMM assists a well-wisher/family/association to support the missionary formation of a religious sister who has joined a Missionary Congregation to become a missionary sister. The Sponsorship amount is Rs. 50,000/- (Fifty thousand only) which can be paid in different instalments. The sponsor and sister are introduced each other and remembered each other in the daily prayers.

3.   "PRESHITHAVAARAM/MISSION WEEK"   The Director Bishop Mar Raphael Thattil raised the idea of celebrating SYRO-MALABAR MISSION SUNDAY.  The Syro Malabar Synod of August 2014 agreed to celebrate it on 11th January 2015 and later the Synod of August 2015 decided to celebrate it as ‘SYRO-MALABAR MISSION WEEK’ or PRESHITHA VAARAM from 06-12th January, every year. Major Arch Bishop issues a circular on Preshithavaaram to be read in all Parishes and Mass Centers on the previous Sunday of Mission Week every year.  Towards creating awareness, the SyMM office prepares,brochures, Wall Posters, Promotional Videos, envelops, hand books,prayer cards in different languagesetc. and reach every eparchy for distribution and awareness.

4.   "MISSION PROJECTS"   The fund collected through Mission Week is used to support the Mission Projects from different mission territories outside Kerala.  Mission projects are mostly seeking assistance to support the evangelization activities and formation of small Christian communities.

5. "SPONSOR A MISSIONARY KIT” This programme invites the well-wishers to help the missionaries in the remote villages to avail religious articles for the religious purpose.  The religious articles include Bible, Cup, Paten, Vestments (Kappa),Thaksa, Tabernacle, Incense etc. for the Holy Mass. The Office facilitates the distribution of the pious articles to the Mission Centers in genuine need.
